Plato’s Couch – NEAR DARK (1987)

Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark (1987) is the subject of the first episode of Plato’s Couch. Here I explore issues of genre, gender, violence and the film’s production history.

Hi Josh. Sorry it’s taken me so long to comment but just wanted to say I really liked the podcast a lot. Reminded me of the Moviedrome or Cinema Extreme intro’s we used to get on tv here in the UK (although obviously your essay approach goes into far more detail). Loved that you gave background on all aspects of the film like soundtrack, director’s intention’s, screenwriter etc giving it a great documentary style level of completion. It actually sent me down a wiki-hole reading about Eric Red, an odd and intriguing character himself. Anyway, just wanted to convey my appreciation of Plato’s Couch and tell you that I hope you’ll be doing more. I’ve included links to the afore mentioned uk telly programs, though, as a film PHD you may well have heard of them before.

    Kind regards,

    Rich

Hi Rich, it’s been a *long* time between visits on this site and I’ve only just read your comment – five years passed in the blink of an eye – just wanted to reach out and say thanks. Really appreciate your feedback. Sadly Plato’s Couch never really eventuated but I have been producing audio commentaries for a host of different films on US/UK and Australian blu-ray labels so the work is living on elsewhere. Appreciate you taking the time to listen to the Near Dark episode. All the best, J.
